Preparing an STL File for Wax Printing
A properly prepared STL file creates a smoother path from digital design to physical wax pattern. Before submitting a model for 3D wax printing, customers should confirm that the file is complete, correctly sized and ready for production.
The following checks can help prevent delays and reduce the likelihood that corrections will be required before printing.
Start with the Final Design
Submit the final version of your model, not an unfinished concept or an earlier design revision.
Before exporting the STL file, confirm that:
• All design elements are present
• The overall form and proportions are correct
• Decorative details are finalized
• Stone settings, openings and other functional features are positioned correctly
• Unwanted construction geometry has been removed
• The design has received its final review
Our service includes reviewing submitted models for printability and production preparation. It does not include creating or redesigning the original CAD model.
Confirm the Dimensions and Scale
Check the model’s dimensions before exporting and uploading the file.
An STL file represents the model’s geometry but does not reliably identify the intended measurement unit. A model designed in millimetres could therefore be interpreted incorrectly if it is exported or uploaded using a different unit.
Confirm that:
• The model uses the intended dimensions
• The correct measurement unit is selected during export
• The exported STL maintains the correct scale
• The uploaded model dimensions match the original design
Even a technically printable model will produce the wrong physical size if its scale is incorrect.
Make Sure the Geometry Is Closed
The model should form a complete, enclosed three-dimensional object. This is often described as closed, watertight or manifold geometry.
A properly closed model has a clearly defined inside and outside. Problems can occur when the geometry contains:
• Holes or gaps in the surface
• Missing faces
• Overlapping surfaces
• Self-intersecting geometry
• Internal geometry that is not part of the intended model
• Edges connected incorrectly
These issues may prevent the file from being interpreted correctly for production.
Check Thin and Delicate Features
Fine detail is one of the key advantages of 3D wax printing, but extremely thin or fragile features can still require additional review.
Pay particular attention to:
• Thin walls
• Narrow connections
• Fine prongs
• Delicate decorative elements
• Long, unsupported projections
• Small details that must remain distinct after casting
A feature that appears clearly on a computer screen might be too delicate to print, handle or cast successfully at its actual size.
Check for Separate or Disconnected Elements
Confirm that every element in the file is intentional.
Small disconnected pieces can be overlooked during the design process. If multiple parts are intended to be printed separately, ensure they are clearly included and positioned appropriately within the submitted file or uploaded as separate files.
Remove any accidental or unnecessary geometry before exporting the final STL.
Consider the Complete Production Process
A wax pattern is one stage in a larger investment-casting workflow. A model should therefore be evaluated not only as a digital design, but also as a physical object that will be printed, handled and used in casting.
Consider whether:
• The wax pattern can be handled without damaging delicate areas
• Important details are sufficiently defined
• Openings and recessed areas are accessible
• The design is appropriate for the intended casting process
• Your caster has reviewed any specialized casting requirements
Our service provides the printed wax pattern. Casting, CAD redesign and other manufacturing services are outside the scope of the 3D wax printing order.
Export the Final STL File
When the design checks are complete, export the final model in STL format.
Before submitting it, open the exported file and verify it independently from the original CAD document. This final check can reveal export problems that might not be visible in the working design file.
Confirm once more that:
• The correct version was exported
• The dimensions and scale are accurate
• The model is complete
• The geometry is closed
• The file opens successfully
• The filename clearly identifies the model
Use a descriptive filename rather than a generic name such as “final.stl.” A clear filename makes the model easier to identify when an order contains multiple files.
What We Review After Submission
We review submitted models for printability and production preparation before printing.
Our review may consider the model’s dimensions, volume, geometry, delicate features and other characteristics that could affect production. Models with complex geometry, unusual structures or specialized handling requirements should be submitted through Request a Custom Quote.
This review does not replace the customer’s final design inspection. Customers remain responsible for confirming the design, dimensions, scale and intended function of their submitted models.
