How We Review Your STL File

Every 3D wax printing order begins with a completed STL file supplied by the customer. Before printing, the model must be reviewed to determine whether it can proceed through the selected ordering workflow and be prepared for production.

This review focuses on printability and production requirements. It does not replace the customer’s final design review or include creating, repairing or redesigning the original CAD model.

Why Is an STL File Reviewed?

A digital model may look complete on a computer screen while still containing characteristics that affect how it can be printed as a physical wax pattern.

The review helps identify whether:

• The file can be opened and processed
• The model is within the applicable size and volume limits
• The geometry appears complete
• Fine or fragile features require additional consideration
• The model can proceed through the selected ordering option
• Additional information or Request a Custom Quote may be required

Reviewing these elements before production helps establish a clearer path from the submitted file to the finished wax pattern.

File Format and Basic File Integrity

Our service accepts completed models supplied in STL format.

The first step is confirming that the file can be opened and interpreted by the production software. The model should contain the complete geometry required for printing and should not be corrupted, empty or incomplete.

Before submitting an STL file, customers should confirm that the correct and final version has been selected.

Clear file names are especially helpful when an order includes:

• Several different designs
• Multiple ring sizes
• Left and right components
• Revised versions of the same model
• Different quantities for each file

This helps distinguish the models during review and production.

Dimensions and Scale

An STL file contains geometry, but it does not independently confirm the designer’s intended real-world size. The model must therefore be exported and submitted at the correct dimensions and scale.

During review, the model’s X, Y and Z dimensions can be assessed against the requirements of the selected workflow.

For Standard Printing, the model must not exceed 70 mm on any individual axis. A model measuring more than 70 mm in its X, Y or Z dimension requires additional assessment through the Custom Quote process.

Customers remain responsible for confirming that the submitted dimensions match the intended finished wax pattern.

Model Volume

Model volume is another measurement used when assessing Standard Printing eligibility.

The maximum model volume for Standard Printing is 3,000 mm³, or 3 cm³. A model can remain within the 70 mm dimensional limit while still exceeding the allowable volume.

Both conditions must therefore be satisfied:

• No individual X, Y or Z dimension exceeds 70 mm
• The model volume does not exceed 3,000 mm³

If either limit is exceeded, the project must be submitted through Request a Custom Quote so its production requirements can be reviewed manually.

Closed and Complete Geometry

A production-ready STL file should represent a closed and complete three-dimensional object.

Open edges, missing surfaces, intersecting geometry or unintended internal structures can affect how production software interprets the model. These issues may not always be obvious from a standard rendered view.

Our review is intended to identify apparent printability concerns. It is not a comprehensive CAD-validation or model-repair service. Customers should inspect and finalize their designs before uploading them.

If a file requires correction or redesign, a revised production-ready STL file may need to be supplied before the order can proceed.

Fine and Fragile Features

Thin walls, narrow connections, delicate prongs and small decorative elements may require additional consideration when translated from a digital model into a physical wax pattern.

A feature that exists successfully in the STL file may still be too delicate for reliable printing, handling or delivery. The scale of the model also matters because reducing a design reduces the dimensions of its smallest details.

During review, we consider visible characteristics that may affect production, including:

• Very thin or fragile sections
• Small unsupported features
• Delicate connections between components
• Deep openings or recessed areas
• Intricate or unusual geometry
• Features that may be vulnerable during handling

Models requiring more extensive assessment or specialized production handling should be submitted through Request a Custom Quote.

Reviewing Quantities and Variations

When an order contains several files or repeat quantities, the relationship between the models must also be clear.

Each size or design variation should normally be supplied as a separate completed STL file. The requested quantity for each file should be confirmed before production.

Reviewing the complete order helps identify whether it involves:

• Several copies of one eligible model
• Multiple sizes or design variations
• A coordinated production batch
• Different production requirements among the files
• A project that requires additional planning or manual quotation

The appropriate ordering option depends on the models as well as the combined quantity and production requirements. Standard Printing permits up to 50 combined prints across all Standard files. Bulk Printing requires a minimum combined finished model weight of 100 g and permits up to 500 combined pieces. Orders exceeding either quantity maximum must be submitted through Request a Custom Quote.

What Happens After the Review?

The review generally leads to one of three outcomes. The file may be eligible to proceed through the selected workflow. We may request clarification or a revised file if information is missing or an apparent issue needs to be addressed. A project involving complex, delicate, unusual or oversized models, or quantities exceeding the applicable limit, must instead proceed through Request a Custom Quote.

Once a file is accepted for production, it is prepared for the printing process. The completed wax pattern is then inspected before being prepared for pickup or delivery.

What the Review Does Not Confirm

Our file review evaluates printability and production preparation for the wax printing service. It does not certify the engineering, structural performance or suitability of the customer’s original design.

The review also does not include:

• Creating the original CAD model
• Redesigning or modifying the design
• Confirming stone fit or manufacturing tolerances
• Guaranteeing the result of the subsequent casting process
• Casting, mould making or other manufacturing services

Customers are responsible for completing and approving their designs before submission. Our service provides the printed wax pattern for the next stage of the investment-casting process.

A Better File Creates a Clearer Production Path

A complete, correctly scaled and carefully reviewed STL file provides the best starting point for 3D wax printing.

Before submitting your model, confirm that it is the final version, uses the intended dimensions and contains all required geometry. Providing accurate file and quantity information helps us review the project and determine the appropriate path to production.
